The quarter at a glance
What changed
The quarter brought two different kinds of turnover. Bar Victor added an evening bar program in Key Largo and Fishwife began serving in Key West. Brutus Land & Sea and Hard Rock closed. Those changes belong in individual trade-area assessments, not a single story about the health of every Keys restaurant. A strong location, a recognizable name and an operating business are different assets.
Cheeca Lodge's announced acquisition agreement put an established Islamorada resort into a new ownership plan. Key West gained its first MICHELIN restaurant recognition, while airport baggage improvements and tourism capital allocations addressed the visitor experience beyond the hotel door. For owners, the useful response is specific: review referral relationships, update arrival instructions and understand how a nearby construction project or ownership change could affect the business.

Our read
What the quarter tells us
Extending a brand into dinner requires a separate operating model
Bar Victor adds cocktails and shared plates to a location associated with bakery purchases. That changes the length of the visit, the staffing mix and the work at close. An owner considering a similar extension should forecast the evening on its own: bartender coverage, security needs, waste and the labor required after the last guest leaves. Existing recognition may help trial. It does not set the margin. [1][8]
A resort ownership change reaches beyond the room department
The Cheeca agreement connected a major resort to Bass Pro's nature-based hospitality business. Restaurant operators, fishing guides and event suppliers should establish who controls purchasing and partnerships after any transition. Do not assume an existing handshake arrangement survives unchanged. Put referral terms, settlement timing and service standards in writing, then assess whether the relationship creates profitable work or simply more requests. [5]
Recognition raises expectations before it raises capacity
Key West's first MICHELIN selections gave hotel teams another concrete dining recommendation. For recognized restaurants, attention is useful only if the operation can handle it. Check reservation rules, quoted waits, bakery production and how the host explains a sold-out item. Nearby operators can sharpen their own identity without copying the selected restaurants. A clear reason to visit is more useful than an unsupported claim about being the best. [6]
Public infrastructure belongs in the local business plan
The announced capital allocations covered visitor facilities, access and marine recreation across the island chain. Funding is the beginning of a project, not proof that a restroom, boat ramp or attraction is ready for guests. Nearby restaurants should track construction access and delivery routes. Hotels should keep concierge instructions current and ask which work may affect noise, parking or a promised guest activity. [7]
A closure needs an employee plan as much as an inventory plan
Reporting on Brutus described staff learning of the shutdown at short notice. Whatever the reason an owner decides to close, the operating work remains concrete: payroll, vendor balances, reservations, gift cards and equipment. Assign an owner to each task and communicate a schedule. Other employers should recruit for real vacancies rather than treating a closure as permission to collect names without a funded position. [3]

At quarter-end
What to watch next
The outlook below reflects information available at the close of Q2 2026. An announced date is a target, not a confirmed opening.
Hilton's planned July 1 conversion on Stock Island
Hilton announced that the existing Ocean's Edge property would join its portfolio as Hilton Key West Resort & Marina. At June 30, July service remained the next milestone. This was a conversion of existing rooms, not a new-build hotel. [13]
The Reserve's planned multi-concept opening
The May announcement proposed four restaurant concepts inside the former bank at 510 Southard Street, with an initial late-June target. The research does not verify service by quarter end. Check the actual operating kitchens and hours before counting four separate businesses. [14]
Second airport baggage carousel
The first carousel was in service; the second was expected in fall. Hotels and transportation partners should follow the airport's phased arrival changes and revise pickup instructions when the next section opens. [10]
Cheeca's transition plan
The June company statement described the acquisition agreement and intended resort improvements without publishing a room-addition count or a detailed construction schedule. Suppliers should confirm contacts and operating requirements as the transition develops. [5]
Decisions to take back to the business
- Budget an evening bar extension separately from the existing breakfast or bakery operation.
- Contact resort purchasing and event teams after an ownership transition to confirm contracts, payment terms and who can approve work.
- Update front-desk arrival instructions for the airport's new baggage-claim arrangement.
- Track public-project work schedules before printing parking, pickup or access directions.
- Keep a written closure plan covering employees, reservations, gift cards, suppliers and equipment.
Common questions
Florida Keys: the practical questions
Which Florida Keys restaurants permanently closed in Q2 2026?
Brutus Land & Sea in Marathon closed April 2 and Hard Rock Cafe Key West closed April 30. These are the closures with a verified event date in this inventory. Other reported shutdowns remain unassigned where the last service date could not be established.
Did Key West receive a MICHELIN Star in May 2026?
The confirmed new distinctions were Moondog's Bib Gourmand and Blue Heaven's Recommended listing. Those are different from a MICHELIN Star. Use the exact designation in marketing and concierge material.
Does the Cheeca Lodge announcement mean new hotel rooms opened?
No. The June statement concerned an agreement to acquire an existing resort and plans for its future. It did not establish additional rooms opening during the quarter.
What should a restaurant near a tourism-funded project do first?
Find the construction start, access plan and expected disruption before changing the sales forecast. An allocation is useful evidence that a project is moving, but it is not the same as a finished attraction delivering visitors. Update guest directions when work actually begins.
Research notes
Sources and coverage
Documented inventory for April through June 2026. Research combined separate monthly opening and permanent-closing searches with local newspaper coverage, operator announcements, tourism reporting and area-by-area checks. Entries distinguish openings, permanent closures, ownership agreements and public funding allocations. Restaurant counts are not a census of all licensed businesses. Planned dates are excluded from completed-opening counts.
Coverage limits and unresolved items
- The Cafe on Southard, Glazed Donuts and Doner on Wheels were reported closed during 2026, but retrieved evidence did not establish their last service dates reliably enough for quarter assignment.
- La Pincha is described as a spring 2026 opening, which does not determine whether first service fell in March or April. It is excluded from quarterly opening counts pending a firmer date.
- Paradise Cuban Restaurant's June profile confirms a rebrand and renovation but does not date the ownership change or first service under the new identity.
- Bad Boy Taqueria's departure from Stock Island was reported, but the location's final operating date and relocation chronology were not established.
- Cheeca's official statement uses agreement-to-acquire language. No undisclosed sale price or closing date is inferred.
- Hotel cards show the final month of the quarter. Quarterly averages were not manufactured from monthly occupancy or rates.
- June comparison rates follow the current official monthly PDF. Earlier local coverage quoted different year-over-year comparisons.
Event dates determine which quarter an entry belongs to. Source publication dates and this report’s publication date are recorded separately. Later reporting may verify an earlier event; it does not move that event into a later quarter.
